Biography

1929  Born in New York City, parents Herman David Ruhm & Martica Gookin Sturges.
 1938 - 1944  Attends Thomas School, Rowayton, Conn.
 1946  Graduates from Chatham Hall School (alma mater of Georgia O'Keeffe).
Awarded prize for painting in National High School art contest. Graduates with high honors. Senior thesis: "American Negro Literature."
 1946-47  Attends Stanford University (rooms next to Sandra Day)
 1948-49  Junior Year in Paris, studies at Ecole de Science Politique, Sorbonne, and Ecole du Louvre.  Travels to Rome and Florence.
 1949  Marries artist David Sawin who uses veterans benefits to studyin MFA program at State University of Iowa.
 1950  B.A. summa cum laude University of Iowa. 
 1950 -52   Museum of Modern Art, executive secretary for the    
 Museum's Junior Council and director of the Art Lending Service.
 1953-1962  Contributing editor, Arts and its predecessor, Art Digest.  
 1957-1959  New York correspondent, Art International.
 1963-1965  Lecturer in Art History, Rockland Community College.
 1964-1967  Lecturer in Art History, Hunter College.
 1967-1968  Lecturer in Art History, Parsons School of Design 
 1969-1985  Chair of Department, History and Criticism of Art and   
 Design, Parsons School of Design, faculty member through 1995.
 1967-1973  Visiting lecturer, Queens College, CUNY, summer sessions.
 1974-1977  Visiting lecturer, University of Southern Maine, summer sessions.
 1977-1980   Founding Director, Parsons in Paris, first a summer school, then a year-round school for students of art and design with a Paris campus.  
1979-1990  Faculty member of Paris summer school.
1997  Libra Visiting Professor, University of Maine, Augusta.
1997  Marries James Marston Fitch, author, architect, preservationist, moves to Jane Street in West Village.
1998  Publishes Nell Blaine, Her Art and Life, Hudson Hills Press.
1999 Guest curator, Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid for exhibition based on Surrealism in Exile.  Exhibition travels to Museum of Modern Art,  Strasbourg.
2001 Guest curator, Corcoran Gallery of Art: Icelandic Landscape Painting.
2010 Visiting Scholar, University of Western North Carolina
Served on boards of Heliker LaHotan Foundation, Lucid Art Foundation, Fitch Foundation, Dorothy Dehner Foundation,Rockland County Historic Review Board, Percent for Art Commission, Rockland Center for the Arts.
